Wine from North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a wine country of contrasts: hot, dry valleys produce generous red wines, while altitude and the influence of lakes can preserve freshness. Vineyards are concentrated largely along the Vardar River and its tributaries, in a mainly continental climate tempered by Mediterranean influences from the south. Many whites show ripe fruit and a supple texture, although carefully selected higher sites can bring greater tension.

National wine legislation governs origin and labelling claims; producers may state a grape, vintage and geographical origin when the applicable requirements are met. There is no internationally familiar quality pyramid directly comparable with DOCG or Prädikat. For wine lovers, North Macedonia is compelling for its meeting of indigenous varieties, warm-valley generosity and a growing group of producers focusing on more precise origins and modern cellar work.
