Wine from Thailand

Thailand is a small but distinctive wine producer in the tropics. The Chao Phraya Delta, also spelled Chao Praya, occupies the low-lying central plain in the river basin near Bangkok. Vineyards in this hot, humid setting do not experience the classic winter dormancy of cool-climate regions. Growers therefore guide the vine cycle through pruning, canopy management and carefully timed harvesting. Water, humidity and fungal pressure make viticulture demanding, and the resulting wines should not be judged as copies of those from temperate European regions.

Chenin Blanc is an important grape and suits the need for freshness in a warm country. Colombard, Shiraz or Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also grown. White wines are commonly dry to gently aromatic, combining citrus and tropical fruit with a rounded texture; lively acidity is especially valuable. Reds tend to be supple, fruit-led and medium-bodied rather than deeply powerful. Producers use modern cellar techniques and may employ oak for texture and structure, but the most successful wines usually preserve fruit and brightness. Monsoon Valley is among the better-known names in modern Thai wine.

Thailand has a geographical-indications framework, but not a nationwide, tiered appellation system comparable to AOC, DOCG or Prädikat. Producer, origin, grape variety and vintage on the label are therefore often the most useful guides. For wine lovers, the appeal lies in the particular identity of tropical viticulture: expect neither an imitation of Bordeaux nor of the Loire, but approachable wines that can work especially well with aromatic, spicy food. Serve whites well chilled and reds slightly cool. Most Thai wines are made for early drinking, although individual bottlings can offer more structure.
