Cyprus has a long wine tradition shaped by mountain vineyards, indigenous grapes and a hot, dry Mediterranean climate. Many of its most compelling vineyards lie at altitude in and around the Troodos Mountains, where cooler nights slow ripening and help preserve acidity. Lemesos (Limassol), Paphos and Larnaca are important districts; the vineyards of Lemesos include the historic Commandaria area. Producers range from established larger houses such as KEO, Kamanterena-Sodap and ETKO-Olympus to smaller estates including Makkas, Fikardos and Hadjiantonas.
Xynisteri is the leading white variety. It commonly makes light- to medium-bodied wines with citrus, apple, white-flower and sometimes saline or herbal notes. It can be made in a simple, fresh style, yet cooler high-altitude sites can yield more serious, textured whites. Among black grapes, Mavro has long been significant, notably as a component of Commandaria. Maratheftiko often produces deeply coloured reds marked by dark fruit, violet, spice and firm tannin; Lefkada can add colour and structure. International grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc and Mataro (Mourvèdre) are also planted.
The island’s best-known wine is Commandaria, a protected designation for sweet wine from a delimited area on the southern slopes of the Troodos massif. It is made from Xynisteri and Mavro, whose grapes are traditionally dried after harvest. The wines are generally rich, showing dried fig, raisin, caramel, nuts and spice, and can age for a long time. Dry reds based on Maratheftiko, or blends with Syrah and Cabernet, present a more structured, sun-shaped side of Cypriot wine.
Cypriot origin protection follows the European PDO and PGI categories. For wine lovers, Cyprus is most rewarding when the label clearly identifies origin, altitude and grape variety. There is no single island style: fresh mountain Xynisteri, savoury reds and concentrated Commandaria together form its distinctive range.
