Wine from Slovenia

Slovenia is a small but remarkably varied wine country, positioned where the Alps, the Pannonian plain, the Adriatic and the Karst plateau meet. Its vineyards are grouped into three principal regions: Podravje in the northeast, Posavje in the southeast, and Primorska along the western and coastal side. White wine accounts for a clear majority of production, although the range of climates, elevations and soils makes for very different wines. Most Slovenian wine is still consumed within the country.

Podravje, whose best-known district is Štajerska, has a cool continental climate well suited to vivid, aromatic whites. Sauvignon blanc, pinot blanc, chardonnay and local Šipon, the Slovenian name for Furmint, can combine ripe fruit with firm acidity. Posavje has a long tradition of approachable, fresh wines and is associated with Cviček from Dolenjska, a light red blend that is generally low in alcohol. Sparkling wines and sweeter styles also have a place there.

Primorska has stronger Mediterranean influence and includes Goriška Brda, the Vipava Valley, Karst and Slovenian Istria. Goriška Brda, adjoining Italy’s Collio, is especially important for Rebula, pinot grigio and international varieties; merlot and cabernet can achieve greater ripeness here. Vipava is notable for local white grapes such as Zelen and Pinela. In Karst, iron-rich limestone soils shape the dark, brisk traditional Teran made from Refosco, while Vitovska is an important white variety. Slovenian Istria shares the Adriatic character of neighbouring coastal regions, with Malvasia and Refosco among its familiar grapes.

Wine labels may refer to namizno vino, or table wine, to deželno vino with a protected geographical indication, and to quality wines with protected origin. Within the latter framework, kakovostno vino and vrhunsko vino indicate higher quality levels in Slovenian terminology. For enthusiasts, Slovenia is compelling for its precise cool-climate whites, characterful skin-contact wines from white grapes, and reds that express a distinct regional identity.
