Wine from Spain

Spain is a wine country of striking contrasts: cool, wet Atlantic areas in the northwest, high continental plateaus inland, and warm Mediterranean coasts. It has the world’s largest vineyard area, although old vines, dry soils and wide spacing often result in modest yields. While international grapes are present, Spain’s real depth lies in its remarkable range of native varieties.

Tempranillo is the leading black grape and the backbone of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Rioja commonly combines ripe red fruit, spice and, according to its maturation, vanilla and cedar notes from oak. Ribera del Duero is higher in altitude and more climatically extreme; its wines are often darker, more powerful and more firmly structured. Garnacha produces juicy, spicy reds from Navarra to the concentrated, slate-influenced wines of Priorat. Monastrell is important around Valencia and Murcia, while Bobal is a signature grape of Utiel-Requena in the Valencia region.

White wine styles are equally varied. In Rueda, Verdejo makes dry, aromatic whites with citrus, herbal notes and sometimes a slight bitter finish. Rías Baixas is the best-known home of Albariño: fresh, saline and often excellent with shellfish. In Catalunya, including Penedès, producers make both still wines and sparkling Cava. Cava is made by the traditional method, usually from Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada, though Chardonnay and other permitted grapes may also be used.

The main origin classifications are DO (Denominación de Origen) and the more stringent DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada); Rioja and Priorat, where the Catalan term DOQ applies, sit in this highest tier. Maturation terms also matter: Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva establish minimum ageing requirements, with details varying by region. Spain therefore offers everything from approachable young wines to complex bottles capable of long ageing, shaped by oak, altitude, old vines and local grapes.
