Wine from Chile

Chile is one of the most distinctive wine countries of the New World. Viticulture began in the sixteenth century with Vitis vinifera brought by Spanish colonists; French varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère followed in the nineteenth century. Carmenère found a particularly important home in Chile after being confused with Merlot for many years. Modernisation from the 1980s, including temperature-controlled stainless-steel fermentation and more considered oak ageing, supported a major rise in quality and exports.

The Central Valley is the principal backbone of production. It includes Maipo, Rapel, Curicó and Maule. Maipo Valley, close to Santiago and influenced by the Andes, is especially associated with structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Rapel contains Cachapoal and Colchagua; Colchagua in particular produces ripe, concentrated reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah and Merlot. Curicó is diverse, while Maule, among Chile’s oldest and largest wine areas, combines old vineyards with vivid, characterful red and white wines.

Cooler coastal regions offer a contrasting expression. Casablanca Valley, Leyda Valley and the more northerly Limarí benefit from the cooling Humboldt Current and morning fog. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir can retain bright acidity alongside citrus, herbal and saline notes. Aconcagua Valley includes a warm inland sector for reds as well as cooler coastal sites; Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc perform well there. Dry summers, Andean irrigation water and relatively low disease pressure also make organic and sustainable viticulture practical in many places.

Chile uses a Denominación de Origen, or DO, system, which may identify a region, subregion, zone and sometimes an area on the label. It is less a fixed quality hierarchy than many European appellation systems, so producer, vineyard site and winemaking remain essential guides. Drinkers can generally expect ripe yet balanced fruit, clear varietal character and dependable quality. Cabernet and Carmenère often suggest blackcurrant, plum, herbs and sometimes cedar; coastal whites tend to be crisp and aromatic. The better reds can develop well over several years.
