Mendoza

Mendoza lies on the eastern foothills of the Andes in western Argentina, in the shadow of Aconcagua. It is by far the country’s most important wine province and accounts for roughly two-thirds of Argentina’s wine production. Vineyards commonly stand between 600 and 1,100 metres above sea level, while parts of the Uco Valley climb higher still. A dry, sunny continental climate, wide day–night temperature shifts and the protective presence of the Andes favour slow, healthy ripening. Irrigation with meltwater from the mountains is indispensable.

Soils are generally poor, stony and alluvial: layers of sand, gravel, stones and calcareous material carried down from the Andes by rivers. Their composition can change markedly between districts and even between parcels. Luján de Cuyo and Maipú, close to Mendoza city, are the historic heartlands. The higher Uco Valley, encompassing Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos, has become especially important for fresher, more finely drawn wines. Gualtallary, Paraje Altamira and Los Chacayes are notable Uco Valley origins, while Agrelo, Perdriel and Vistalba are well-known places in Luján de Cuyo.

Malbec is Mendoza’s signature grape, typically yielding deeply coloured reds with plum, blackberry and violet notes, ripe fruit and usually supple tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Bonarda and Petit Verdot are also significant, both in varietal bottlings and blends. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc benefit particularly from cooler, high-altitude sites; Pinot Noir is also planted there for still and sparkling wines. Criolla Grande and Cereza have historically occupied substantial vineyard area, principally for lighter, simpler styles.

Mendoza is a broad geographical origin rather than one homogeneous appellation, so rules and origin designations vary by subregion. Luján de Cuyo received Argentina’s first delimited DOC in 1993. The finest reds balance generous fruit with freshness, floral detail and tannic shape; high-altitude Malbec can be more taut and mineral than examples from warmer, lower sites. Straightforward wines are enjoyable young, while serious Malbecs and Cabernet-based blends can often develop for five to ten years or more, depending on producer, vintage and élevage.
