Wine from Argentina

Argentina is one of the world’s largest wine-producing countries. Its wine culture has roots in Spanish colonisation and was shaped further by immigration from Spain and Italy. Viticulture began around Santiago del Estero in the sixteenth century, then developed mainly along the dry western foothills of the Andes. Mountain snowmelt supplies irrigation, while abundant sunshine, low rainfall and marked day–night temperature shifts help grapes retain character and ripen reliably.

Mendoza is by far the leading region, with Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley among its best-known origins. In Luján de Cuyo, including Agrelo, Malbec commonly gives ripe, dark-fruited wines with generous texture. The higher Uco Valley includes Tupungato, Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira. Altitude, cooler nights and varied soils often bring greater freshness, tension and tannic definition. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are also important there.

Malbec is Argentina’s defining grape, ranging from juicy, approachable reds to concentrated, oak-matured wines capable of ageing. Bonarda generally produces soft, fruit-led reds, while Syrah and Petit Verdot appear both as varietal wines and in blends. Torrontés, particularly associated with the high-elevation Cafayate Valley in Salta and also grown in La Rioja, is an aromatic white grape: floral and citrus-toned, usually made in a dry style.

San Juan, La Rioja, Salta and Patagonia offer further perspectives. Warm San Juan remains important for volume but also produces an increasing amount of quality wine. Salta has some of the country’s most striking high-altitude vineyards; Cafayate combines intense sun with cool nights. In cooler, windy Patagonia—especially Río Negro and Neuquén—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Merlot can perform particularly well.

Argentina uses geographical indications, including Indicaciones Geográficas (IG) and protected denominations of origin. Within Mendoza, provenance is increasingly useful to wine drinkers as altitude and soil become central to a wine’s identity. Expect generous fruit, ripe yet often fresh red wines, and a growing range of precise whites, sparkling wines and cool-climate expressions.
