Wine from France

France is one of the wine world’s defining reference points. Vineyards extend from the cool north to the Mediterranean south, producing an exceptional range of wines. Place of origin often matters more than grape variety: a bottle labelled Burgundy, Bordeaux or Sancerre first speaks of location, soil, climate and local practice. French viticulture has ancient roots, shaped by Roman cultivation and, later, by monasteries and merchant houses.

The Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC, aligned with the European AOP framework) protects geographical origin and sets rules on such matters as permitted grapes, yields, winemaking and vineyard boundaries. IGP wines, including Pays d’Oc, allow more flexibility and commonly foreground the grape variety. Vin de France has broader sourcing rules. In prestigious regions, villages, individual vineyards and classifications can add further precision: Burgundy uses, among other levels, premier cru and grand cru, while Bordeaux has several historical and regional classification systems.

Burgundy is centred on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Côte de Beaune is celebrated for layered Chardonnay and refined Pinot Noir, with grower or producer and vineyard name especially relevant to the buyer. Champagne produces sparkling wine through traditional bottle fermentation, principally from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Alsace focuses on aromatic white wines, often labelled by grape variety. In the Loire, Sancerre is a classic source of taut, fresh Sauvignon Blanc.

Bordeaux is known for blends led by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as dry whites often based on Sauvignon Blanc. In the Southern Rhône, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre make warm, spicy reds; Châteauneuf-du-Pape is among its best-known appellations. Côtes-du-Rhône is often an approachable introduction to this profile. Languedoc-Roussillon and Pays d’Oc combine a warm climate with broad stylistic freedom, from fresh varietal wines to powerful Mediterranean blends.
