Austria is one of Europe’s most precise wine countries, despite its relatively small scale. Dry white wine is its principal strength, with Grüner Veltliner as the defining grape: it can be light and peppery, or layered, spicy and mineral. Riesling is especially important along the Danube. Following the diethylene glycol scandal of 1985, wine law and controls were greatly tightened, and the country deliberately moved away from bulk wine towards quality and clearly defined origin.

Niederösterreich is the major white-wine region. Wachau, Kremstal, Kamptal, Wagram and Weinviertel follow, or sit close to, the Danube. Wachau is noted for terraced vineyards, often on primary rock, and concentrated Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Kamptal and Kremstal combine cool influences with warmer Pannonian air. Weinviertel DAC is closely identified with crisp, peppery Grüner Veltliner. Further east, the warmer regions of Carnuntum and Thermenregion produce both distinctive whites and reds.

Burgenland, around the warm Neusiedlersee, is the heartland for red and sweet wine. Blaufränkisch makes vivid, spicy reds with dark-cherry fruit, fresh acidity and often considerable ageing potential; Zweigelt is generally juicier and more immediately approachable. Morning mist around the lake promotes noble rot, allowing rich Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines. Ruster Ausbruch is a classic sweet-wine speciality. In Steiermark, especially Südsteiermark, Sauvignon Blanc is central alongside Welschriesling, Morillon (Chardonnay) and Pinot varieties; wines are generally aromatic, taut and fresh.

The Austrian framework includes Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein, while DAC appellations set origin-based rules for permitted grapes and style. A Ried is a defined vineyard site of particular origin. In Wachau, the traditional terms Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd are also used for stylistic levels within Codex Wachau. Lovers should expect clarity of fruit, lively acidity, generally restrained oak and a strong relationship between grape, place and wine.
