Wine from Ukraine

Ukraine has an old wine culture extending from the Black Sea to the foothills of the Carpathians. Its best-known areas are Odesa oblast in the southwest, Zakarpattia in the west, and Crimea. Odesa benefits from hot summers, Black Sea influence and abundant sunshine; vineyards around Shabo and the Budjak area grow on varied soils. Zakarpattia, near the Hungarian and Slovak borders, is cooler and wetter, with a Central European vineyard tradition. Crimea has a distinctly maritime climate and is historically important for sweet, fortified and sparkling wines. The peninsula is internationally recognised as part of Ukraine but has been under Russian occupation since 2014, so the provenance and availability of wines made there require particular care.

Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, varieties rooted in the wider Caucasian wine world, are important alongside international grapes. Saperavi makes deeply coloured reds with dark berries, plum, lively acidity and often firm structure. Rkatsiteli usually produces fresh dry whites, though it can also suit aromatic or sweeter styles. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are widely planted for red wine, while Chardonnay, Riesling, Aligoté, Traminer and Muscat Blanc broaden the white-wine palette. Muscat and Traminer are especially suited to fragrant off-dry and dessert wines, although contemporary producers also make them dry.

The range runs from straightforward, fruity dry wines to serious oak-aged red blends, traditional-method sparkling wines and rich sweet bottlings. Crimea is associated with producers such as Massandra, Inkerman and Zolotaya Balka, while Odesa is home to Shabo; Alma Valley, Esse and Uppa-Pavel Shvets are further names of interest. Ukraine protects geographical indications, but a rigid, consumer-facing hierarchy comparable to AOC or DOCG is less central to the market. It is therefore useful to consider producer, grape, vintage and sweetness as well as region.

For wine drinkers, Ukraine is compelling for its mixture of local and international grapes, cool and warm mesoclimates, and a long Soviet and pre-Soviet heritage. Russia’s full-scale invasion from 2022 has severely affected growers, vineyards, logistics and exports, yet many Ukrainian winemakers have continued to work. Bottles can range from immediate, accessible wines to ageworthy examples, particularly concentrated Saperavi and carefully made red blends.
