Abruzzo

Abruzzo is a mountainous wine region in central Italy, bordering the Adriatic Sea to the east. The landscape is predominantly rugged, with about 65% of its area covered by hills and mountains. This geography brings cool breezes from the Apennines combined with the warmth of the Mediterranean, creating ideal conditions for slow grape ripening and preserving freshness in the wines.

The soils of Abruzzo are mainly composed of clay, limestone, and gravel. The hills are particularly well-suited for the Montepulciano grape, while white varieties like Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino, and Passerina thrive in the cooler, higher elevations. The region is home to both large cooperatives and small family wineries, leading to a broad range of wine styles.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the flagship red wine: full-bodied, deeply colored with vibrant dark fruit and spice, yet supple and balanced. Many examples age well for a decade or more. Whites, especially from Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, tend to be fresh, light, and sometimes delicately floral or mineral, with Pecorino offering more body and a savory edge.

There are several appellations (DOC and DOCG) such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Notable areas include Loreto Aprutino, Colline Teramane, and Tullum. Abruzzo wines are known for their food-friendliness and growing international reputation.
