Alentejo is located in the southern half of Portugal, covering about one third of the country’s land area. The region is known for its gently rolling hills, extensive fields, and ribboned cork oak forests, giving it a unique rural character. With hot, dry summers and mild winters, Alentejo is one of the hottest and most sun-baked wine regions in Europe, presenting special challenges for viticulture, particularly due to climate change.
Soils in Alentejo are varied, including schist, granite, and in some zones clay-limestone, offering a diverse foundation for grape growing. The vineyards are spread across eight official subregions including Borba, Évora, Reguengos, and Portalegre, each lending their own nuances to the wines.
The main red grape varieties grown here are Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (Tempranillo), Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Castelão, and Alfrocheiro. For whites, Antão Vaz and Arinto dominate, with some Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon used for blends. Alentejo reds are generally ripe, juicy, and approachable, often with soft tannins and flavors of red and black fruits. Whites tend to be aromatic, full-bodied, and balanced by lively acidity.
Wines from the region are labeled either as Vinho Regional Alentejano (with more flexible rules on grape varieties) or at the stricter DOC Alentejo level, which is subdivided into registered subregions. Some producers still employ the traditional practice of fermenting in large clay amphorae (talhas), a legacy from Roman times. While most Alentejo wines are made for early enjoyment, especially the fruit-driven reds and aromatic whites, some structured reds made from Alicante Bouschet or Touriga Nacional have excellent aging potential.
Noteworthy towns and subregions include Borba, Reguengos, Évora, and Portalegre. Beyond wine, Alentejo is globally recognized for its cork production, which is an integral part of the region’s identity.
