Lalande-de-Pomerol

Lalande-de-Pomerol is a red-wine appellation in the Libournais district on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. It lies immediately north of Pomerol, with the winding Barbanne stream forming an important boundary between the two appellations. Recognised as an AOC in 1936, it covers principally the communes of Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac. The climate is temperate maritime, shaped by Atlantic influence: winters are generally mild, summers warm, and rainfall adequate, although conditions around harvest can make vintages notably different.

Its varied soils help explain the range of styles. Sand, gravel and clay are widespread around Lalande-de-Pomerol, while Néac is particularly associated with clay and limestone soils, in places with iron-rich deposits. Clay retains water and can support Merlot through dry spells; gravel aids drainage and stores warmth. The most successful sites commonly balance effective drainage with enough water reserve to allow steady ripening.

Merlot is the leading grape, lending rounded texture, plum and cherry fruit, and a supple, approachable opening. Cabernet Franc contributes perfume, freshness and structure; smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot may add backbone, spice and colour. The appellation is exclusively for red wine. Maturation in oak barrels is common, though the use of new oak varies greatly according to château and vintage.

Lalande-de-Pomerol has no internal cru classification comparable to those in parts of the Médoc. A wine’s standing therefore depends strongly on its producer, terroir and parcel selection. Château Siaurac, Château La Fleur de Boüard, Château Haut-Chaigneau and Château Garraud are among the names illustrating the appellation’s diversity. The wines are often approachable earlier than more powerful Pomerols, yet strong examples can develop well over five to fifteen years. Youthful bottles show ripe red and dark fruit, violet and sometimes cocoa; bottle age can bring cedar, tobacco, earth and truffle-like notes.
