Okanagan Valley

The Okanagan Valley in southern British Columbia, Canada, is the country's second-largest wine region and produces over 80% of the province's wine. Stretching along the picturesque Okanagan Lake and bordered by other lakes, the valley benefits from a dry, sunny climate with significant temperature swings between day and night, helping maintain acidity in the grapes.

The soils are varied, shaped by ancient glacial activity, and include sand, gravel, clay, and stony patches. This diversity allows for a broad range of grape varieties to thrive, with over 8,500 hectares of vineyards covering the region. Microclimates vary widely, with the southern end warmer and drier, while the north is cooler and more suited to white grape varieties.

Okanagan's main grape varieties include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Riesling, as well as Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Malbec, and Gewürztraminer. The region is known for its crisp, mineral-driven white wines, aromatic styles, and structured, ripe reds with good aging potential.

Although there is no traditional French-style classification, producers focus on quality. Notable wine communities include Naramata, Osoyoos, and Oliver. Okanagan wines are prized for their purity, vibrant fruit, and, in the case of reds, the ability to age gracefully for several years.
