Pomerol

Pomerol is a small Right Bank appellation in Bordeaux’s Libournais, east of the city of Bordeaux and close to Saint-Émilion and Lalande-de-Pomerol. Unlike many Bordeaux communes, it has no substantial village centre: houses, a church and vineyards are dispersed across the landscape. The climate is temperate maritime, moderated by Atlantic influence, with the Dordogne also affecting local temperature and humidity. Vintage variation matters, particularly where rain affects flowering or the harvest.

Soil is central to Pomerol’s identity. The plateau and higher sites combine gravel with clay, while other parcels contain sand, gravel and iron-rich clay. The celebrated blue clay found in parts of the plateau retains moisture and is especially well suited to Merlot, helping it preserve freshness during warm, dry periods. Marked soil variation over short distances explains the differences in texture and structure between estates.

Merlot is by far the leading grape, producing deep, rounded wines with plum, black cherry, violet and, with bottle age, earthy or truffle-like notes. Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic lift, freshness, spice and backbone; Cabernet Sauvignon is planted only in limited quantities. A few producers may include small amounts of Malbec, Petit Verdot or Carménère, but these are not defining elements of the classic style. Pomerol is made almost exclusively as dry red wine, commonly matured in oak.

Pomerol holds AOC status but has no official cru classification comparable to those of the Médoc or Saint-Émilion. Its standing rests instead on producer, terroir and the location of individual parcels. Vieux Château Certan, Château Clinet, Château Gazin, Château l’Évangile, Château Nénin and Château Petit-Village are among its well-known estates; Château Beauregard, Château Rouget and Château Mazeyres are also established names. Good Pomerol can be appealing young thanks to its velvety Merlot texture, while the finest examples can develop for many years, depending on producer and vintage. Fruit then evolves towards cedar, tobacco, truffle and forest floor. Serve at about 16–18°C; decant youthful, concentrated wines.
