Terre Siciliane

Terre Siciliane is an Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) covering the whole Sicilian region, including its smaller islands. Rather than a tightly delimited local appellation, it is a broad geographical designation for wines from an island of marked contrasts. Vineyards range from the hot coastal plains around Trapani, Marsala and Agrigento to cooler inland hills and the elevated slopes of Etna. The Mediterranean moderates heat in some areas, while dry summers, abundant sunshine and wind help keep grapes healthy. Altitude and cool nights can, in the right sites, retain valuable freshness.

Soils are equally diverse, encompassing limestone, clay, sand, alluvial deposits and, around Etna, volcanic material. Terre Siciliane gives growers and wineries scope to express these conditions without the more prescriptive rules of a DOC or DOCG. It is consequently used for straightforward, modern wines as well as blends and grape varieties that do not fit a more specific Sicilian appellation. For varietal wines, the named grape normally accounts for the great majority of the blend.

Nero d’Avola is the leading red reference: it often gives dark-fruited, spicy, substantial wines with a ripe Mediterranean character. Frappato makes lighter, floral and juicy reds, while Nerello Mascalese can bring finesse and tension, particularly in cooler places. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay are also widely planted. Among whites, Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia are important, capable of producing anything from uncomplicated fresh drinking wines to more textured, layered examples.

There is no cru classification or fixed hierarchy of celebrated villages within Terre Siciliane, as there is in some smaller appellations. Names such as Trapani, Marsala, Palermo and the hill country of western and central Sicily provide useful context, but each bottle should be judged by producer, vineyard and grape. Most whites are best enjoyed young, within a few years. Well-made Nero d’Avola, Syrah and carefully matured blends can develop over several years, gaining notes of dried herbs, tobacco and earth.
