Victoria

Victoria is not a uniform wine district but a large Australian state covered by a broad geographical indication. Vineyards extend from the cool, ocean-influenced south around Melbourne to the hot, continental inland near the Murray River. Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges and parts of Geelong are among the cooler areas. Further inland are Heathcote, Bendigo, Pyrenees, Grampians, Rutherglen, King Valley and Goulburn Valley. This considerable geographical range is the basis for Victoria’s unusually broad spectrum of wines.

Soils are equally diverse. Yarra Valley includes grey loams, clays and sandy sites, while Mornington Peninsula combines clay, sand and volcanic influences. The elevated Macedon Ranges often have cool, lean volcanic soils. Heathcote is particularly associated with ancient, iron-rich Cambrian soils, which can lend Shiraz structure and savoury spice. In Rutherglen, warm conditions and varied loam and clay soils help grapes reach the ripeness needed for concentrated fortified Muscat wines.

Shiraz is the defining red grape, producing markedly different expressions: peppery and taut in cooler places, dark-fruited and powerful in Heathcote and warmer districts. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are central to Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges and Geelong, where refined still wines and traditional-method sparkling wines are made. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Viognier are also important. Rutherglen has international standing for Muscat and Topaque, while King Valley is notably associated with Italian varieties.

Australian geographical indications protect origin. Victoria may appear as a broad origin statement on a label alongside more specific zones, regions and subregions. A claimed variety, vintage or geographical indication is generally subject to the 85 percent rule. There is no Burgundy-style cru classification, so region and producer are especially useful guides. Fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool southern districts can age well, as can structured Heathcote Shiraz and Cabernet from areas including Yarra Valley. Fruit-forward wines from warmer districts are often approachable earlier; properly stored Rutherglen Muscat and Topaque can evolve for a very long time.
