Bardolino Classico is the historic core area of Bardolino DOC, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the province of Verona. It principally covers the communes of Bardolino, Garda, Lazise, Affi, Costermano sul Garda and Cavaion Veronese. The lake moderates temperatures: winters are less severe, while warm summers are often tempered by breezes and differences in altitude. This setting helps explain Bardolino’s light, lively personality, distinctly different from the more structured reds of nearby Valpolicella.

Vineyards occupy rolling morainic hills shaped by ancient glaciers around Lake Garda. Their soils are consequently diverse, combining gravel, stones, sand, clay and calcareous material. They generally drain well and do not naturally produce especially weighty wines. Corvina is the principal grape, bringing cherry fruit, herbs and refined structure. Rondinella contributes colour and dependable, gentle freshness. Corvinone, Molinara and small proportions of other permitted local or international varieties may complete the blend.

Bardolino Classico is usually a dry, light- to medium-bodied red, pale to bright ruby in colour, with modest tannin and refreshing acidity. Typical notes include sour cherry, redcurrant, violet, dried herbs and, at times, a subtle peppery or almond-like nuance. It is a wine made for easy drinking and is often especially appealing served slightly cool. Most examples are best enjoyed young, within a few years of harvest, although carefully made and more concentrated wines can develop for longer.

“Classico” denotes the traditional area of origin; it is not automatically a quality tier above every other Bardolino. The regulations also encompass rosé wines labelled Chiaretto, while Bardolino Superiore DOCG is a separate, higher category. Bardolino, Garda and Lazise are the best-known places in and around the Classico zone. At table, its freshness and restraint make it an excellent partner for Veneto and Lake Garda cooking, including cured meats, fish, pasta and poultry.
