Castilla, also known as Castilla-La Mancha, is an expansive wine region in central Spain, stretching across vast plains at high altitudes. This region experiences an extreme continental climate, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, and considerable temperature variation between day and night. The elevation, often above 600 meters, helps the grapes retain freshness and acidity despite the scorching summer heat.

The soils of Castilla are mostly calcareous and clay-based, low in fertility, and well-drained. These challenging soils encourage grapevines to root deeply, resulting in concentrated fruit character and robust wines. Soil types do vary across the region given its size, but the overall composition supports a wide range of both native and international grape varieties.

Castilla is recognized for both red and white wines. Tempranillo (also called Cencibel) is the leading grape for reds, accompanied by varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Garnacha. For white wines, Verdejo, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are prevalent. Other grapes like Petit Verdot and Garnacha Tintorera are increasingly found in modern blends. Many wines are produced under the Vino de la Tierra classification, which gives winemakers flexibility compared to the more regulated DO system.

Wines from Castilla commonly exhibit a fruit-forward style—reds are approachable and robust, while whites tend to be fresh and aromatic. Some producers craft fuller-bodied reds with aging in oak, and rosé and sparkling wines are also made. Castilla has become an important region for innovative Spanish wines, pairing tradition with modern techniques and a focus on quality.
