Graves de Vayres

Graves de Vayres is a Bordeaux appellation for red and white wines on the right bank of the Dordogne, east of the city of Bordeaux. Covering roughly 700 hectares in the communes of Vayres and Arveyres, it lies geographically within the Entre-Deux-Mers area. The river moderates conditions to a degree, while Atlantic influence brings a temperate, humid growing season. In wetter vintages, well-drained sites are especially important.

Its name refers to graves, or gravelly soils. These are often mixed with sand and clay, with limestone in some places. Gravel warms readily and drains efficiently, aiding the ripening of red varieties; clay can retain useful water during drier spells. This range of soils helps explain the variation within this compact appellation, from supple, fruit-led wines to firmer and more structured examples.

Merlot generally forms the core of the red blends, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Red Graves de Vayres is normally dry, showing plum, blackcurrant, cherry and herbal notes, sometimes with cedar or toast where oak is used. It commonly has a rounded palate and moderate tannin; the more carefully selected wines can develop for several years. Whites are commonly based on Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, sometimes with Muscadelle. They range from fresh and dry to rounded and lightly full-bodied, with citrus, white flowers, stone fruit and, in Sémillon-led wines, a gently waxy character.

Graves de Vayres holds AOC status and should not be confused with the better-known Graves appellation on Bordeaux's left bank. The regulations permit both still red and white wine, rather than prescribing one fixed blend style. Vayres and Arveyres are the key villages. The appellation is particularly useful to drinkers seeking approachable Bordeaux with a clear sense of site: reds suit everyday meat dishes, while fresh to rounded whites are versatile at the table.
