Pessac-Léognan

Pessac-Léognan is an appellation in the northern part of Graves, on the Left Bank of the Garonne immediately south and south-west of Bordeaux. Its vineyards are scattered across communes including Pessac, Léognan, Martillac, Talence and Cadaujac, and the proximity of the city is unusually evident here. An Atlantic maritime climate brings generally mild winters and warm summers. The Garonne moderates temperatures, while the Landes forest offers some protection from damp westerly weather. Rainfall around harvest remains a decisive vintage variable.

The name Graves refers to the gravelly soils that underpin the region’s standing. Deep beds of gravel and pebbles, deposited by the Garonne, warm readily and drain freely, conditions especially suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Soil is far from uniform, however: clay, sand and limestone matter greatly from one site to another. This diversity helps explain Merlot’s value on cooler or more clay-rich parcels, as well as the distinctive quality of dry white wines from favoured sites.

Red wine accounts for most production and is usually a blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and occasionally Malbec or Carmenère in supporting roles. The leading reds combine blackcurrant, cassis, cedar, graphite and sometimes smoky notes with fresh structure and firm, refined tannins. Dry whites, principally Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon with occasional Sauvignon Gris or Muscadelle, range from taut, citrus-driven and herbal examples to broader, waxy, barrel-aged styles. At their best, oak is integrated while brightness and a savoury, saline edge remain intact.

Pessac-Léognan includes Château Haut-Brion, the sole red first growth in the 1855 classification situated outside the Haut-Médoc. It also contains every château included in the 1953 Graves classification, revised in 1959; that classification recognises estates for red and/or white wine. Notable names include Pape Clément, Smith Haut Lafitte, Carbonnieux, La Mission Haut-Brion, Haut-Bailly, Domaine de Chevalier and Latour-Martillac. Depending on producer and vintage, serious reds can evolve for ten to several decades, while the finest dry whites often gain complexity over five to fifteen years.
