Südtirol-Alto Adige

Südtirol-Alto Adige is Italy's northernmost wine region, nestled in the Alps against the Austrian border. The area benefits from a unique climate: warm, sunny days ensure good ripening while cool alpine nights preserve fresh acidity and finesse in the wines.

The soils are varied, including slate, quartz, limestone, and glacial moraine, providing an excellent foundation for a variety of grapes. Indigenous Lagrein and Gewürztraminer flourish here, as do international varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Red wines made from Lagrein, Pinot Noir, and Merlot are concentrated and elegant, while higher elevation sites yield crisp, vibrant whites like Pinot Grigio and Kerner.

With DOC status, Alto Adige is noted for its focus on varietal purity; many wines are single grape varieties, highlighting clear fruit definition and terroir expression. Notable wine villages include Terlano, Kaltern, Tramin (especially for Gewürztraminer), and Valle Isarco (Eisacktal), all known for distinctive local styles.

The wines of Südtirol-Alto Adige are typically fresh, aromatic, and refined, marked by clarity and (in the best examples) aging potential that brings extra depth and complexity.
