Wine from Russia

Russia is a wine country of strong contrasts: most of its territory is too cold for viticulture, while commercial production is concentrated largely in the south. Krasnodar Krai, between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, is the principal centre. The Taman Peninsula, Anapa, Novorossiysk, Gelendzhik, Krymsk, the Afips River Valley and the Lefkadia Valley benefit from warm summers, maritime breezes and varied soils. Farther north, the Don Valley in Rostov Oblast is a smaller but historically important wine area. Dagestan, on the Caspian Sea, also has a long wine-growing tradition. Wine is made in Crimea; internationally, the territory is recognised as part of Ukraine and is under Russian control.

Plantings include many international varieties: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Aligoté and Traminer. Saperavi, a variety originating in Georgia, is important for deeply coloured, spicy reds. In the Don Valley, the local Krasnostop Zolotovsky is also worth seeking out when available. The warm southern climate can produce ripe, generous reds and whites, while sites near the Black Sea may retain useful freshness. Dry still wine is important, but sparkling wine has been central to the sector since the nineteenth century, with Abrau-Durso a well-known name. Fanagoria, Château Tamagne, Myskhako, Sauk-Dere, Kuban-Vino and Vedernikov are among producers wine drinkers may encounter.

Modern Russian wine law includes protected geographical indications, ЗГУ, and protected designations of origin, ЗНМП. These categories aim to make provenance clearer on labels, rather than functioning as a direct quality hierarchy comparable to a French cru classification. For enthusiasts, the stated origin is therefore particularly useful: Taman and the Novorossiysk coast offer profiles distinct from the more continental Don. Expect a broad market, ranging from straightforward fruity wines to more serious terroir-led bottlings and traditionally made sparkling wines. When buying, check the region, vintage, grape variety and producer; these details usually communicate more than a general designation such as “Russian wine.”
