Wine from Turkey

Turkey, and Anatolia in particular, stands alongside the Caucasus among the regions associated with the early domestication of Vitis vinifera. Its modern wine sector is modest relative to the country’s size and long history of grape growing, yet it offers striking geographical diversity. Vineyards extend from European Thrace to the elevated landscapes of Central and Eastern Anatolia. International grapes are widely planted, but indigenous varieties provide the most distinctive expression of Turkish wine.

Thrace, including the Marmara area, is an important centre for quality wine, shaped by the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara and Aegean influences. In the Aegean region—around İzmir, Urla, Denizli and Manisa—dry summers are moderated by sea breezes and, in some places, altitude. This supports ripe yet often balanced wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay are common, alongside local grapes. Coastal areas and islands can produce wines with a clear Mediterranean profile.

Central Anatolia, around Ankara and Kalecik, is the home of Kalecik Karası, a red variety generally producing elegant wines with red-fruit character, supple tannins and lively acidity. Narince, associated with Tokat, is one of the country’s key white grapes; it may combine citrus, apple and floral notes with enough texture for oak ageing or bottle development. Öküzgözü from Eastern Anatolia tends to make bright, fruit-led reds, while the more powerful and tannic Boğazkere of Southeastern Anatolia contributes depth and ageing potential. Blends of the two are a Turkish classic.

Turkey does not have a single consumer-facing hierarchy comparable to AOC or DOCG. Geographical indications and registered place names exist, but the producer, grape variety, vineyard location and winemaking details on a label are often more useful than a formal appellation ladder. Wine lovers can expect considerable stylistic range: fresh Narince whites, rosés, approachable red blends and ambitious wines from native grapes. With established producers such as Kavaklıdere, Suvla, Kayra, Urla Winery and Sevilen, tasting local varieties alongside international bottlings is especially rewarding.
