Alentejano

Alentejano is the broad geographical designation for wines from Alentejo, the vast region east and south of Lisbon towards the Spanish border. Cork oak woods, olive groves and rolling plains shape its landscape. The climate is Mediterranean with a marked continental influence: summers are hot and dry, while cooler nights and higher sites can preserve freshness. The regional Alentejano designation gives growers and producers considerable flexibility; the protected Alentejo DOC has more tightly defined rules.

Soils are notably diverse, including granite, schist, clay, limestone and, in places, sand. This matters in a warm region: poor, free-draining sites can restrain vine vigour, while altitude, aspect and water availability strongly affect freshness. The DOC has eight subregions: Borba, Évora, Granja-Amareleja, Moura, Portalegre, Redondo, Reguengos and Vidigueira. Northern, elevated Portalegre can deliver a cooler expression, while Vidigueira is also associated with lively white wines.

For reds, Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet are central grapes, often joined by Touriga Nacional, Castelão or international varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aragonez contributes ripe red fruit and structure, Trincadeira spice and lift, and Alicante Bouschet deep colour and weight. White blends commonly feature Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro and sometimes Verdelho. Antão Vaz brings breadth and ripe fruit, while Arinto contributes acidity and tension. Stainless steel and oak maturation are both widely used.

Red wines are generally generous and sun-ripened, with plum, blackberry, herbs and sometimes chocolatey or earthy notes. The best examples balance ripeness with freshness and can age well, whereas approachable regional wines are often enjoyable young. White Alentejano ranges from light, citrus-driven styles to broader wines with peach-like fruit and a creamy texture. Reds suit roast lamb, pork and slow-cooked dishes; whites work particularly well with grilled fish, shellfish and creamy cheeses.
