1 wines from 1 wineries in our database

Wiebelsberg is an Alsace Grand Cru on the northern side of Alsace, on slopes above Andlau and Dambach-la-Ville, close to Barr. The vineyard occupies east- to south-east-facing foothills of the Vosges. Morning sun helps ripening, while the mountains provide shelter from much Atlantic rainfall. This comparatively dry, sunny setting supports a long growing season; elevation and slope still help retain freshness in the grapes.

Its character is closely linked to poor, free-draining Vosges sandstone soils. Sandstone warms readily but retains less water than clay or marl, encouraging vines to root deeply. The resulting wines are generally refined and taut rather than overtly broad. Riesling is the benchmark grape here, often showing citrus, white peach, apple and floral notes, sometimes with a smoky, stony edge. Bottle age can bring honey, dried citrus and classic petroleum-like nuances, while the wines retain their lively framework.

Wiebelsberg is within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation, a designation for a defined lieu-dit subject to stricter origin and production rules than the general Alsace appellation. Labels normally state both ‘Alsace Grand Cru’ and Wiebelsberg, and frequently name the grape variety as well. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Muscat are among the traditional varieties permitted for Grand Cru, although Riesling is the most characteristic expression on this sandstone site. According to producer and vintage, wines can range from taut dry examples to clearly sweet styles.

Young, dry Wiebelsberg Riesling is particularly good with freshwater fish, seafood and delicately spiced dishes. Mature or sweeter bottlings work well with foie gras, blue cheese or fruit-based desserts. The best dry wines can commonly develop for five to fifteen years or more, while sweet selections often reward substantially longer cellaring. Serve dry Riesling cool rather than icy to reveal its sandstone-derived nuance.
