Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune lies west of the Côte de Beaune, on the plateau above the celebrated Côte d’Or escarpment and across its adjoining valleys and slopes. Vineyards are generally higher and farther inland than those along the main slope. This brings a cooler, later-ripening growing season and a greater exposure to spring frost. Altitude, aspect and shelter vary considerably from site to site, accounting for the broad range of expressions found under the appellation.

Soils are chiefly limestone and marl, often mixed with clay and stony material. Some elevated sites are shallow and lean, while valley-floor soils may contain more clay. Limestone contributes freshness and structural definition, while the cooler setting helps retain acidity. Growers frequently work with parcels whose ripening patterns and water retention differ markedly.

The Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune appellation, established in 1961, covers the entire subregion. Unlike the Côte de Beaune, it contains no separate village appellations and no Premier Cru vineyards. Red and rosé wines are made principally from Pinot Noir, while Chardonnay is the principal grape for whites. Aligoté and Pinot Blanc are also found locally, although they are not central to the appellation’s classic identity.

Red wines are usually bright and perfumed, showing red cherry, raspberry, currant, herbs, and at times floral or earthy notes. They tend towards a light to medium body, lively acidity and fine tannins. White wines commonly combine citrus, apple, white flowers and sometimes peach with a chalky sense of tension; oak use depends on the producer. Places associated with the area include Nantoux, Échevronne, Meloisey, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Villers-la-Faye. Many wines are enjoyable young, while well-made examples from strong vintages can develop for several years, gaining breadth and complexity.
