Corbières

Corbières is a large appellation in the Languedoc, within the Aude department, stretching between Narbonne, the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Its vineyards are scattered across a broad, highly fragmented landscape, from warm lowlands near the coast to cooler, higher valleys in the Hautes Corbières. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean, with abundant sunshine, limited rainfall and the frequent, dry Tramontane wind. This wind reduces disease pressure and supports healthy ripening, while altitude and cool nights can preserve freshness.

The soils are as varied as the landscape. Limestone, clay-limestone, schist, sandstone, marl and rounded stones all occur, so Corbières is not a single stylistic entity. Carignan is historically the most widely planted black grape; from old vines and controlled yields, it can bring dark fruit, spice and firm structure. Grenache contributes ripe red fruit and generosity, Syrah adds colour, pepper and violet notes, and Mourvèdre brings backbone and a savoury Mediterranean character. Cinsault may provide a more fragrant, supple element.

Red wine overwhelmingly dominates production, although Corbières also makes rosé and a small quantity of white wine. Created in 1985, the AOC requires red wines to be blends of permitted Mediterranean varieties; the detailed composition varies by colour and cuvée. White Corbières may include Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Roussanne and Marsanne. The better whites often combine citrus and white-flower aromas with fennel or garrigue herbs, sometimes supported by a rounded texture.

Towns and villages such as Lagrasse, Durban-Corbières, Tuchan, Sigean and Lézignan-Corbières reflect the breadth of the area. Boutenac, on distinctive stony slopes, also has its own appellation, Corbières-Boutenac. Red Corbières is commonly generous, spicy and sunlit in character, showing black cherry, blackberry, liquorice, olive and dried-herb notes. Straightforward cuvées are enjoyable young, while more serious examples from old Carignan and well-sited parcels can, according to producer and vintage, develop for five to ten years or longer.
