Côtes de Bourg

Côtes de Bourg is a Bordeaux appellation on the right bank, centred on the historic town of Bourg-sur-Gironde, close to the meeting point of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers and the Gironde estuary. Its vineyards lie north of Blaye and Fronsac, opposite parts of the Médoc. The broad estuary moderates temperature extremes, while the generally maritime climate brings regular rainfall. Viticulture here reaches back to Roman times, and Bourg became an important wine port during the Middle Ages.

By Bordeaux standards, the landscape is notably hilly, with vineyards on plateaux and slopes that often offer effective drainage. Soils vary considerably: clay and limestone are central, alongside gravel, sand, and clay-limestone mixtures. Clay retains water in dry summers and is particularly well suited to Merlot. Limestone can bring freshness and definition, while gravelly or sandy sites often produce a more immediately approachable expression.

Merlot is the leading grape and usually forms the core of the red wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc contribute structure, aromatic lift and freshness; Malbec and Petit Verdot are grown in smaller proportions and may add colour, spice and tannin. Côtes de Bourg is primarily a red-wine appellation, with most wines made as blends. Dry whites are also permitted, generally based on Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and sometimes Muscadelle. Rosé is produced as well, though it is less central to the appellation's identity.

There is no formal cru classification comparable to those of the Médoc or Saint-Émilion; the Côtes de Bourg appellation is the key designation. Important villages and localities include Bourg, Tauriac, Saint-Seurin-de-Bourg, Comps and Gauriac. Red wines commonly combine ripe black and red fruit—plum, cherry and cassis—with cedar, spice or graphite notes according to site and élevage. The best, more concentrated examples can develop for five to ten years or longer, while supple Merlot-led cuvées are often enjoyable in youth.
