Armenia is a wine country with a very old wine culture and a modern sector that is being reshaped. Archaeological finds in the Areni cave in Vayots Dzor show that wine was made here in antiquity. Today’s vineyards are often planted at considerable altitude, in a dry continental climate of abundant sunshine, cool nights and marked temperature shifts. Irrigation is essential in many places, while altitude and nocturnal cooling help grapes retain freshness.

Vayots Dzor is the reference region for Areni, usually called Areni Noir: a red variety capable of producing elegant, rather than excessively weighty, wines with red cherry, spice, dried-flower notes and lively acidity. Producers such as Zorah have helped bring this style to international attention. In the Ararat plain, encompassing Ararat and Armavir, many vineyards occupy lower, warmer sites. Alongside local grapes, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and other familiar international varieties are grown there. Armavir is also important for sparkling wine and brandy production.

Aragatsotn benefits from slopes around Mount Aragats and from cooler, elevated sites. It demonstrates why altitude matters so much to balance in Armenian white and red wines. Among white grapes, Voskehat and Kangun deserve particular attention, alongside Rkatsiteli and locally planted Kakhet. Voskehat can yield fragrant, structured dry whites, while Kangun is used for both still and sparkling wines. Karmrahyut and Saperavi broaden the range of red varieties.

Armenia does not have a widely established, tiered quality system directly comparable with AOC or DOCG. Its legislation does, however, provide protection for geographical indications and appellations of origin. For wine drinkers, producer, provenance, vineyard altitude and grape variety are therefore often the most useful guides. Expect fresh, aromatic whites and spicy reds with sound acidity, as well as oak-aged cuvées and a growing sparkling category. These wines naturally suit Armenian food, where grilled meats, herbs, vegetables and savoury cheeses call for both freshness and structure.
