Wine from Hungary

Hungary has a long wine tradition and brings together a continental climate with highly varied soils: volcanic rock around Tokaj and Badacsony, as well as loess, limestone and clay in other regions. Its best-known name is Tokaj in the northeast. Furmint and Hárslevelű underpin both dry, high-acid whites and the celebrated sweet wine Tokaji Aszú. Aszú is made with shrivelled grapes affected by noble rot; late-harvest wines, Szamorodni and the exceptionally concentrated Tokaji Eszencia are also part of the region’s repertoire.

The warmer southern regions of Villány and Szekszárd are central to red wine. Villány is particularly associated with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and full-bodied blends, usually ripe and structured. Szekszárd is known for Kékfrankos, Kadarka and blended reds, including Bikavér. Further north, Eger is the classic home of Egri Bikavér, known abroad as Bull’s Blood of Eger. It is not a grape variety but a regulated red blend in which Kékfrankos plays an important part.

Around Lake Balaton, the moderating influence of the water and the hilly, often volcanic sites favour vibrant whites. Badacsony is especially distinctive for basalt-derived soils and varieties including Olaszrizling, Furmint and Kéknyelű. Balatonboglár produces fresh whites, rosés and sparkling wines. Near Budapest, the cooler Etyek-Buda area is noted for crisp whites and sparkling-wine base wines. Sopron, close to Austria, is a key source of Kékfrankos, while Neszmély and Tolna offer approachable, fruit-led styles.

Hungary’s origin rules follow the European framework: OEM denotes protected designations of origin, while OFJ covers protected geographical indications. Individual regions set further rules on permitted varieties, yields and winemaking. For wine drinkers, Hungary is compelling for the contrast between volcanic-site Furmint, expressive Kékfrankos and ripe southern Bordeaux-variety blends. Quality is diverse, but attentive producers often deliver freshness, a clear sense of place and worthwhile ageing potential.
