Wine from Moldova

Moldova sits between Romania and Ukraine and, despite its modest size, has a deeply rooted wine culture. Alongside commercial vineyards, many villages retain small plots around family homes; home-made wine and locally maintained vine selections remain an important part of the country’s wine identity. The climate is largely continental, with warm summers and cold winters. Topography, woodland and rivers moderate conditions in some places, while the southern areas are generally warmer and drier.

The three historic areas with protected geographical indication are Codru in the centre, Ștefan Vodă in the south-east and Valul lui Traian in the south. Codru, around Chișinău, is relatively cooler and has a strong presence of white, aromatic and sparkling wines. Cricova is particularly noted for its extensive underground cellars and traditional-method sparkling wine. Ștefan Vodă, including Purcari near the Dniester, is especially associated with structured reds and blends. Cahul and Etulia are in the warmer south, where ripe, fuller-bodied reds and whites can thrive.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay are major international varieties, while Fetească Neagră and Băbească Neagră give red wines a distinctly regional accent; Saperavi contributes colour and structure. Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Pinot Noir are also planted. Wine lovers can therefore find crisp, fruit-led whites, oak-matured red blends, rosé and sparkling wines. On labels, the protected geographical indication is useful: it links origin and production rules to a defined area. Expect sound value, ripe fruit and a recognisable meeting point between local tradition and international grape varieties.
