Wine from Switzerland

Switzerland produces precise, food-friendly wines, from lakeside Chasselas and Alpine whites to elegant Pinot Noir and ripe Ticino Merlot.

708 wines from 359 wineries in our database

Switzerland is a small but notably varied wine country, with vineyards running from the terraced slopes of Lake Geneva to warm valleys on the southern side of the Alps. Production is concentrated in the French-speaking west and in Ticino to the south. Valais is the largest region, known for its dry mountain climate, sunny slopes and wide range of indigenous varieties. Vaud, including Lavaux and La Côte beside Lake Geneva, is the classic home of Chasselas. Geneva and Neuchâtel add white, rosé and red wines, while Zürich, Thurgau and Graubünden show a stronger German-speaking influence.

Chasselas is the signature white grape, often called Fendant in Valais. It usually makes dry, light- to medium-bodied wines with restrained floral, citrus and occasionally saline notes. Its subtle character makes it particularly food-friendly and capable of expressing site. Petite Arvine from Valais generally gives more substantial whites, with lively acidity, citrus, rhubarb or salty nuances and potential to develop in bottle. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and other international varieties are also grown.

For reds, Pinot Noir and Gamay are especially important, vinified on their own or together; Dôle from Valais is traditionally associated with these two grapes. Merlot is the benchmark red variety in Italian-speaking Ticino, where it can produce ripe, spicy, smoothly structured wines. Syrah has also established a convincing presence, especially in warm Valais. More recent crossings such as Gamaret and Diolinoir are valued for colour, fruit and structure.

Swiss wine law uses protected appellations of origin, generally called AOC, administered largely at cantonal level. Permitted grapes, yields and production rules therefore vary by region. Swiss wine is exported only in limited quantities, so it is less routinely encountered abroad. Wine lovers can expect precision and freshness above all: site-sensitive Chasselas, distinctive Alpine whites, graceful Pinot Noir and ripe Ticino Merlot.
