Chianti

Chianti is Tuscany’s broad red-wine area, stretching through the hills of central Tuscany between Florence and Siena and into sectors toward Arezzo, Pisa and Pistoia. Vineyards occupy varied elevations in a Mediterranean climate moderated by altitude and cool nights. This contrast is important for Sangiovese: even in warm seasons, it can retain the bright acidity and aromatic definition that shape the region’s wines.

Soils vary substantially across the appellation. Limestone-rich galestro, friable alberese, and mixtures of clay, sand and stones are common. Site therefore matters greatly: higher, stonier vineyards often give scented, firm wines, while warmer or more clay-rich sites can bring riper fruit and a broader texture. Sangiovese is the essential grape, commonly supported by local varieties such as Canaiolo Nero and Colorino. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot may also play a supporting role in some blends.

Chianti DOCG includes a number of named production zones, including Chianti Classico, Rufina, Colli Senesi, Colli Fiorentini and Colli Aretini. Chianti Classico is legally a separate DOCG within the wider historic area and bears the black rooster, or Gallo Nero, as its emblem. Sangiovese must form the dominant share of Chianti DOCG; exact blend rules and ageing requirements vary by category and subzone. Riserva wines receive longer maturation than standard bottlings and often show greater depth and structure.

Typical Chianti is dry and marked by cherry and sour-cherry fruit, plum, violet, dried herbs and earthy notes, with tobacco or leather emerging in maturity. Its best examples combine lively acidity with assertive yet ripe tannins. Straightforward Chianti is excellent young, even with a slight chill at the table. More serious Riservas and wines from villages such as Radda, Gaiole, Castellina and Greve in Chianti can generally develop for five to ten years or longer. The straw-covered fiasco bottle remains an icon of the region, but is now rare.
