Douro

The Douro is one of Portugal’s most celebrated and historic wine regions, stretching along the steep banks of the Douro River in the northeast. Protected by mountain ranges from the coastal Atlantic climate, the region experiences hot, dry summers and cold winters, creating excellent conditions for grape growing. The iconic terraced vineyards, cut into schist soils, force the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, resulting in concentrated, expressive fruit.

The Douro holds Portugal’s highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). While the region is world-famous for producing Port, it now produces as much high-quality dry red and white wine as fortified. The reds are most often blends of native varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, while whites typically feature Rabigato, Viosinho, and Gouveio.

Douro reds are known for being rich, aromatic, and full-bodied, often displaying intense dark fruit, spice, and a firm tannic structure, with considerable aging potential. Whites from the region are generally mineral, lively, and fresh, characterized by citrus and stone fruit. Notable villages and vineyards include Pinhão, São João da Pesqueira, and Peso da Régua.
