Haut-Médoc

Haut-Médoc is an appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary, north of Bordeaux. It extends for roughly 60 kilometres along the vineyard belt of the Médoc peninsula and, with some interruptions, surrounds the better-known communal appellations of Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe. The Gironde’s broad waters and the Atlantic’s influence moderate temperature extremes and help reduce spring-frost risk. The climate is maritime and generally mild, although Cabernet Sauvignon’s late ripening makes careful vineyard work essential in wet vintages.

Its finest sites sit on well-drained rises of gravel, pebbles and sand, deposited by the Gironde and ancient watercourses. Gravel warms readily, retains heat and encourages deep root systems, making it especially well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Clay, limestone and heavier sandy soils also occur. Merlot is often particularly valuable on cooler, more clay-rich ground. This varied geological picture explains the appellation’s range, from firm, long-lived wines to rounder examples that are approachable earlier.

Red wine is the heart of the AOC. Cabernet Sauvignon commonly leads the blend, supported by Merlot and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; Malbec and Carmenère are permitted but uncommon. Haut-Médoc follows the Bordeaux appellation system and has no separate internal cru hierarchy. Several classed-growth châteaux from the 1855 classification are nevertheless located here, including Château La Lagune and Château La Tour Carnet. Producers such as Château Sociando-Mallet and Château d’Agassac are also well-known exponents of the appellation.

A good Haut-Médoc often suggests blackcurrant, cassis, plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco and sometimes violet. Oak ageing may add spice, toast and pencil-shaving notes. Firm yet ripe tannins and fresh acidity give the best bottles a traditional capacity to age: straightforward cuvées are often enjoyable after three to six years, while serious château wines from strong vintages can develop for ten to twenty years or longer. Serve with pink lamb, grilled beef, duck or substantial mushroom dishes.
