Lirac is a southern Rhône cru on the river’s right bank in the Gard department. Named after the village of Lirac, it lies opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape and immediately beside Tavel. Its Mediterranean climate means abundant sunshine and dry summers, while the mistral can cool and dry the vineyards decisively. Low hills and cooler nights on elevated sites can help grapes retain freshness.
Soil diversity is central to the appellation’s character. Rounded river stones, comparable to the galets roulés found across the Rhône, store heat and aid ripening. Red clay, limestone, sand and stony terraces also occur. Grenache is the foundation of many red and rosé wines, while Syrah and Mourvèdre contribute colour, spice, structure and dark-fruit character. Cinsault and Carignan may add fragrance, freshness or further backbone in blends.
Lirac is one of the Rhône Valley crus and may use its own appellation name rather than the broader Côtes du Rhône designation. Unlike neighbouring Tavel, which is devoted solely to rosé, Lirac permits red, rosé and white wines. Red is the leading style. White blends may include Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Picpoul Blanc and Ugni Blanc. The regulations favour traditional southern Rhône blends, with Grenache playing a central role in red wines.
Red Lirac is generally generous without being heavy, showing ripe cherry, blackberry and plum, with Provençal herbs, pepper, and sometimes liquorice or garrigue notes. Rosé is often more structured and food-friendly than a simple summer wine, while whites can be floral, citrus-led and gently textured. Rosé and white are usually best enjoyed young; fine red cuvées can often evolve for five to ten years. Besides Lirac itself, Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, Roquemaure and Saint-Geniès-de-Comolas are notable communes within the appellation.
