Puglia

Puglia forms the long heel of Italy, set between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Vineyards run from the limestone landscapes of Gargano and Castel del Monte in the north to the Salento peninsula in the south. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean, with abundant sunshine and hot, often dry summers tempered by maritime breezes. Inland sites and higher elevations can retain useful night-time freshness. Drought and heat make site selection and water management particularly important.

Limestone is a recurring feature of Puglian soils, joined by clay, sand, gravel and the red, iron-rich earth that is especially familiar in Salento. This mix can produce full-bodied reds without inevitable heaviness. Old bush vines, known locally as alberello, remain significant in warmer areas: their low training helps shield grapes from sun and wind and commonly restricts yields. On Puglia’s flatter land, however, mechanised farming is more common than in many of Italy’s steepest wine regions.

Primitivo is the best-known grape, particularly around Manduria and Gioia del Colle. It is genetically related to Zinfandel, though wines from Puglia have their own place and expression. Negroamaro is fundamental in Salento and Salice Salentino, where it is often blended with Malvasia Nera. Nero di Troia, notably around Castel del Monte, contributes firm tannin, dark fruit and structure. Susumaniello has gained renewed attention around Brindisi. Fiano, Bombino Bianco and Verdeca also underpin fresh to aromatic white wines.

The region encompasses broad IGT Puglia production, many DOCs, and three DOCGs within Castel del Monte, alongside Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG. Key names include Primitivo di Manduria, Salice Salentino, Castel del Monte, Gioia del Colle, Locorotondo and Martina Franca. Primitivo is usually ripe and spicy, with plum, black cherry and sometimes chocolate notes; Negroamaro more often suggests sour cherry, herbs and a pleasantly bitter edge. Straightforward rosato and reds suit early drinking, while serious Nero di Troia, Negroamaro and selected Primitivo can evolve for five to ten years or longer.
