Wine from Croatia

Croatia is an ancient wine country shaped by the Adriatic coast and its continental interior. Viticulture reaches back to Greek settlers on the southern Dalmatian islands of Vis, Hvar and Korčula, while many local grape varieties have remained closely tied to their particular islands, valleys and slopes. The sunny Mediterranean coast and the cooler north and east create a strikingly broad range of wines.

The Dalmatian coast is particularly important for structured red wines. Plavac Mali is the leading black grape, notably on the steep, sun-baked slopes of Dingač on the Pelješac peninsula and on Hvar. Its wines are generally deeply coloured, generous in ripe fruit and spice, and firm in tannin, often with a savoury Mediterranean note of dried herbs. Northern Dalmatia and the area around Zadar also produce fresh whites and rosés. Pošip Bijeli, especially associated with Korčula, makes whites that can be generously textured yet lively, showing citrus, stone fruit and, at times, a saline edge.

Istria in the north-west is best known for Malvazija Istarska, a white grape capable of wines ranging from light and floral to richer, food-friendly examples. The regional red Terran, also called Terrano, tends to offer brisk acidity, dark fruit and earthy, spicy character. In continental Croatia—including Slavonia, Kutjevo and Plešivica—the climate is cooler. Graševina, the Croatian name for Welschriesling, thrives here alongside Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Styles extend from dry, crisp whites to sweet late-harvest wines and serious oak-aged reds.

Croatia uses geographical indications and wine categories aligned with European Union wine rules. Region, grape and quality designation on the label are therefore useful guides. For wine lovers, the country’s appeal lies in the meeting of indigenous grapes, coastal terroirs and dependable classical styles: seek Dalmatian Plavac Mali for red, Malvazija Istarska or Pošip for white, and Graševina from Slavonia or Kutjevo for a fresh continental expression.
