Wine from Jordan

Jordan is a small and still little-known wine country in the Middle East. Modern commercial viticulture is concentrated largely in the north, where vineyards on relatively elevated, dry sites can benefit from cooler nights. Conditions remain demanding: hot sunny days, low rainfall and limited water resources make irrigation, site selection and careful vineyard work central to quality.

Northern Jordan is chiefly a practical geographical indication rather than an internationally established appellation with a detailed hierarchy of delimited crus. Zumot is the best-known name in Jordanian wine. The country’s small output means its bottles are not always easy to find beyond the region; that scarcity is also part of their interest, offering a view of winemaking in an unusual setting.

Syrah, also called Shiraz, is an important red grape in the available Jordanian selection. In this warm, dry climate it can deliver ripe blackberry and plum notes, pepper and savoury spice. Freshness, alcohol balance and tannin depend greatly on altitude, harvest timing and winemaking. Jordanian reds are generally dry and may combine a ripe, spicy profile with firm structure.

Jordan does not have a widely recognised, European-style quality framework comparable with AOC, DOCG or Prädikat. Producer, grape variety and stated origin are therefore the most useful points to read on the label. Wine lovers should approach the country with curiosity rather than expect one fixed regional signature: these are small-scale, often robust wines in which Northern Jordan’s dry continental conditions are clearly present. Serve red Syrah slightly cool with aromatic grilled dishes, lamb or roasted aubergine.
