Wine from Romania

Romania has been a wine country for centuries, although it is less familiar internationally than its production volume suggests. In 2021, the country produced around 4.5 million hectolitres of wine. Vineyards extend from the Carpathians and Transylvania to the Danube and the Black Sea. This broad geography combines elevated, cooler sites with continental summers and warmer, drier influences. Since the socialist period, substantial investment has gone into replanting, winery technology and quality-focused viticulture, alongside a large output of approachable everyday wines.

Dealu Mare, north of Bucharest, is widely regarded as a leading red-wine area: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and particularly Fetească Neagră benefit from its warm slopes. Vrancea is a large historic wine region. Recaș, in western Banat, is known for both international and local varieties. In Transylvania, especially Târnave, altitude and a cooler climate favour lively whites. Dealurile Olteniei, Drăgășani and Mehedinți, along or near the Danube, offer varied styles. In Dobrogea, around Murfatlar and Sarica Niculițel, the Black Sea moderates heat and supports dependable ripening.

Native grapes give Romania a distinctive identity. Fetească Neagră generally makes deeply coloured, spicy reds with black-fruit character, sometimes oak-aged and capable of development. Fetească Regală tends to be fresh and floral, while aromatic Tămâioasă Românească can be made dry, medium-sweet or sweet. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir are also widely planted. The resulting range runs from crisp dry whites and sparkling wines to fruity rosés, supple reds and richer late-harvest styles.

Within the European framework, protected appellation wines use the DOC designation, short for Denumire de Origine Controlată; wines from broader geographical areas may be labelled IG. A DOC links origin, permitted varieties and production rules, but does not by itself define the style or quality of every bottle. For wine lovers, Romania is compelling for its meeting of familiar international styles, characterful indigenous grapes and considerable regional diversity.
