Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an appellation in the southern Rhône, centred on the village of the same name and extending into parts of Bédarrides, Courthézon and Sorgues, between Avignon and Orange. Its climate is distinctly Mediterranean: hot, dry summers, abundant sunshine and relatively limited rainfall encourage full ripeness. The Mistral, a strong northerly wind, dries the vines after rain and reduces disease pressure. At the same time, wind and drought can make vintage conditions markedly different from one year to the next.
Soils are notably varied. The celebrated rounded stones, or galets roulés, absorb heat by day and release it at night; they are especially associated with certain elevated terraces. There are also sites of red clay, sand and limestone. Clay can lend structure and freshness, sand often produces more perfumed and refined wines, and the stones assist grapes such as Grenache in reaching full maturity. La Crau is among the best-known named vineyard areas, while the slopes and plateaux near Courthézon are also important.
Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is by far the leading style. Grenache usually provides the core, bringing ripe red fruit, spice and warmth; Syrah contributes colour, pepper and darker fruit, while Mourvèdre can add tannin, savoury depth and ageing capacity. Cinsault and Counoise are often valued for fragrance and lift. The regulations permit thirteen traditional grape varieties and do not prescribe a mandatory principal variety. White wine is also allowed, with Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc among the key components, sometimes joined by varieties such as Viognier.
The reds range from supple, early-drinking bottlings to powerful, concentrated wines built for the cellar. Cherry, strawberry, plum, garrigue herbs, black pepper and liquorice are familiar notes, with leathery or earthy nuances emerging with bottle age. Fine examples can commonly develop for a decade or longer, whereas lighter Grenache-led wines may show best sooner. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally full-bodied and spiced, showing stone fruit and floral notes with low to moderate freshness; it is usually best enjoyed younger, though the strongest bottles can evolve for several years.
