Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico is a DOCG area in Tuscany between Florence and Siena, and the historic heartland within the wider Chianti family. Its vineyards occupy a succession of hills around villages including Greve, Panzano, Radda, Gaiole, Castellina and Castelnuovo Berardenga. Elevations of roughly 250 to 600 metres, warm summer days and cooler nights allow grapes to ripen gradually. The influence of the Apennines, changing aspects and the varied relief create recognisable differences from village to village and between individual slopes.

Soils are equally varied and central to the region's character. Alberese, a compact limestone, often contributes tension and firm structure, while friable galestro, a schist-like marl, is associated with fragrance and finesse. Sand, clay and Valdarno sediments also occur. Sangiovese responds clearly to these distinctions: cooler, stony sites tend to preserve bright acidity and floral detail, whereas warmer or more clay-rich sites can yield broader wines with riper fruit.

Sangiovese must be the dominant grape, accounting for at least 80 percent of a red blend. Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo may play supporting roles; Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also permitted, although many growers favour blends based largely or entirely on Sangiovese. White grapes, once part of some historical Chianti recipes, are not permitted in Chianti Classico red wine. The appellation has Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione categories. Riserva and Gran Selezione require longer ageing, while Gran Selezione is the top category, subject to stricter provenance and production requirements.

Typical notes include sour cherry, red plum, violet, dried herbs, tobacco and, at times, earthy nuances. The finest wines unite vivid acidity, firm yet mature tannins and a savoury, sometimes balsamic finish. A young Annata is an especially useful table wine, while strong Riserva and Gran Selezione examples can commonly develop for five to ten years or longer, depending on producer, vintage and site. The black rooster, or Gallo Nero, is the consortium's identifying emblem.
