Côtes du Jura

Côtes du Jura is a broad appellation in France’s Jura region, on the western foothills of the Jura Mountains, extending roughly from Salins-les-Bains in the north to Saint-Amour in the south. Vineyards generally occupy slopes and ledges between about 200 and 450 metres in altitude. The climate is continental, with cold winters, warm summers and a meaningful influence from moist Atlantic weather. Frost, hail and rain can complicate ripening, so lively acidity is a defining feature in many of its wines.

Soils are central to the region’s identity. Limestone, clay and, above all, grey, blue and red marl occur in a close mosaic. Chardonnay often performs especially well on calcareous sites, while Savagnin on marl can produce taut, distinctive wines. The red varieties also respond clearly to place: Poulsard makes pale-coloured yet fragrant reds; Trousseau is usually deeper in colour and more spicy; Pinot Noir contributes structure and fresh red-fruit character. Chardonnay and Savagnin are the essential white grapes, while Sauvignon Blanc has a more limited presence.

The Côtes du Jura AOC permits white, red and rosé wines, as well as vin jaune and vin de paille. There is no formal cru hierarchy within the appellation. Arbois, Château-Chalon and L’Étoile are separate appellations, whereas Côtes du Jura covers a much wider area that includes villages such as Rotalier, Gizia, Pupillin and Arlay. Pupillin is particularly associated with Poulsard. In and around Rotalier, several growers work with old vines and modest yields. Styles vary markedly by grower, from direct, fruit-led wines to deliberately oxidative and strongly site-expressive examples.

Dry whites can combine citrus, apple, white flowers, hazelnut and a saline edge. Barrel ageing and maturation beneath a film of yeast known as voile can add nutty, savoury and spicy complexity. Vin jaune is made solely from Savagnin and aged for an extended period under voile, developing notes of walnut, curry spice, dried citrus and exotic spice. Light Poulsard is particularly appealing served slightly cool; Trousseau and Pinot Noir suit charcuterie or poultry. Straightforward wines are best enjoyed young, while serious whites, vin de paille and especially vin jaune can develop for many years.
