Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon occupies southern France's Mediterranean coast, stretching from the area around Nîmes towards the Spanish border. It brings together historic Languedoc and Roussillon, the latter with a distinct Catalan identity. Vineyards range from coastal plains and terraces to the foothills of the Cévennes, Corbières and Pyrenees. The climate is largely Mediterranean, with abundant sunshine, limited rainfall and the cooling, drying Tramontane wind. Altitude, proximity to the sea and local exposures nevertheless create marked differences between appellations.

Its soils are remarkably diverse. Limestone, clay and rounded stones are widespread in Languedoc, while schist is a defining feature of Faugères and parts of Saint-Chinian. Schist, granite and poor stony soils are also important in Roussillon. Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre are central to many red blends, often with Cinsault. White wines may use Grenache Blanc, Macabeu, Vermentino, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier or Chardonnay. International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc are especially prominent under the flexible Pays d'Oc IGP designation.

The regional Languedoc AOP sets rules on origin, yields and permitted varieties, while many more specific AOPs exist, including Corbières, Minervois, Faugères, Saint-Chinian, Pic Saint-Loup, Fitou, Limoux and Cabardès. In Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon, Collioure, Maury and Banyuls are among the best-known names. Regulations vary by area, but red AOP wines generally emphasise Mediterranean blends. Pays d'Oc IGP, by contrast, gives growers and producers considerable latitude for varietal wines and contemporary blends.

Red wines are often ripe without necessarily being heavy, typically showing black cherry, blackberry, herbs, garrigue, pepper, and at times olive or liquorice. Schist and altitude can bring freshness and a stony edge. Rosés are usually dry and fruity, while whites range from light, citrus-driven examples to richer, herbal styles. Straightforward IGP wines are commonly best enjoyed young; successful red AOP wines from strong sites can develop for five to ten years or longer. Banyuls and Maury also produce fortified sweet wines, combining dark fruit with cocoa and nutty evolution.
