Península de Setúbal

Península de Setúbal brings together sandy-soil Castelão reds, fresh whites and the distinctive fortified wine Moscatel de Setúbal.

118 wines from 27 wineries in our database

Península de Setúbal lies immediately south of Lisbon, between the Atlantic Ocean and the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers. It includes the Serra da Arrábida, the hills around Azeitão and Palmela, and the flatter sandy land of Pegões. The climate is broadly Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers moderated near the coast by Atlantic conditions. That cooling influence, together with local variations in elevation, helps grapes retain freshness.

Soils are notably diverse across the peninsula. Around Arrábida, vineyards may lie on calcareous clay and hillside sites, while Pegões is known for deep, free-draining sandy soils, often with clay beneath. Castelão is particularly well suited to sand and is the traditional foundation of many Palmela reds. Fernão Pires is an important white variety, alongside Arinto, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The region has two principal protected denominations: Palmela DOC, best known for Castelão-based reds, and Setúbal DOC, home to fortified Moscatel de Setúbal. The regional Península de Setúbal designation also permits a wide range of still whites, rosés and reds, including international varieties and blends. The DOC regulations link permitted grapes, delimited origins and production methods to the region’s established wine traditions.

Moscatel de Setúbal is made from Muscat, usually Moscatel de Setúbal and sometimes the rarer Moscatel Roxo. Fermentation is stopped with grape spirit, then the wine matures to develop layers of orange peel, apricot, honey, raisin, flowers and spice. Palmela reds often show plum, blackberry, earth and savoury spice, with firm but generally approachable structure. Key places include Setúbal, Palmela, Azeitão and Pegões. Fresh whites are best enjoyed young, while the better reds—and especially sweet fortified Moscatels—can develop for many years.
