Primitivo di Manduria is a red DOC from southern Puglia, centred on the town of Manduria and extending into parts of the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi. Its vineyards occupy the hot, largely flat or gently rolling Salento peninsula, close to the Ionian Sea. The sea offers some moderation and air movement, yet the Mediterranean climate remains notably sunny and dry. Long, hot summers make water availability and picking dates essential factors in preserving balance.

Soils vary from site to site and include calcareous clay, red terra rossa, sand and stony ground. Many older vineyards are trained as low bush vines, the traditional alberello system; low yields from such vines can bring concentration. Primitivo ripens early — its name refers to this early ripening — and can accumulate sugar rapidly. This accounts for the generous alcohol often found in the wines, while thoughtful growers aim to retain freshness through vineyard work and timely harvesting.

Primitivo di Manduria became a DOC in 1974. The appellation requires Primitivo to be the dominant grape, with only a limited proportion of other authorised red varieties permitted. The area also has Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG, a sweet expression governed by separate regulations. Riserva is reserved for wines meeting more demanding maturation and ageing requirements. Primitivo is genetically the same variety as Zinfandel and closely related to Croatia’s Crljenak Kaštelanski, although Salento gives it a distinctly southern Italian character.

Manduria is the best-known local centre; Sava, Lizzano, Maruggio and Torricella are among the notable towns in or around the production zone. Dry examples commonly show ripe black cherry, plum, blackberry, dried fig and sweet spice, while barrel ageing can add cocoa, vanilla and tobacco. They are full-bodied, supple and warming, with ripe tannins. Straightforward bottlings are enjoyable young; well-made, structured Riservas can develop over several years and, in good storage, often for around a decade.
