Wachau

Wachau lies in Lower Austria along a roughly 30-kilometre stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems. Its vineyards are often planted on steep terraces, patiently shaped by generations of labour above the river. The climate brings together warm, dry Pannonian influence from the east and cooling air from the Waldviertel to the north. The Danube moderates temperature extremes and helps to extend the autumn ripening period; marked day–night variation preserves aroma and freshness.

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the defining grapes, and the wines are almost invariably vinified dry. Grüner Veltliner ranges from light, peppery and citrus-led examples to richer, broader wines with stone fruit, creaminess and occasionally tobacco-like notes. Riesling is generally taut and perfumed, showing citrus, peach, apricot, flowers and a pronounced mineral impression. Gneiss and granite are common on many higher terraces, while loess and sandier deposits occur more often in warmer, lower-lying places. Neuburger, Weissburgunder, Gelber Muskateller and modest plantings of red varieties also have a role here.

Alongside Austria’s general origin rules, Wachau retains the historic classification used by the Vinea Wachau association. Steinfeder denotes light wines of no more than 11.5% alcohol; Federspiel covers 11.5–12.5%; and Smaragd indicates wines of at least 12.5%. Wachau DAC has applied from the 2020 vintage, with Gebietswein, Ortswein and Riedenwein as geographical levels. DAC wines are dry and centre principally on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.

Notable villages include Spitz, Weißenkirchen, Dürnstein and Loiben. Achleiten, Kellerberg, Singerriedel, Klaus and Loibenberg are among the best-known vineyard names. Federspiel is often especially appealing in youth, while fine Smaragd and single-vineyard wines—particularly Riesling, but also Grüner Veltliner—can evolve for many years when well stored.
