Langhe

Langhe is the rolling wine country south and east of Alba, in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont. The name refers both to a historic landscape and to the broad Langhe DOC, which sits alongside the more restrictive Barolo and Barbaresco denominations. Vineyards occupy ridges and slopes, where cooler, higher exposures can differ markedly from warmer, sheltered sites. A continental climate, tempered by Mediterranean influence reaching inland from Liguria, and pronounced day–night temperature shifts help grapes retain fragrance and acidity.

Its soils are largely of marine origin: calcareous marl, clay, sand and, in places, sandstone. Their intricate distribution is central to the diversity of the wines. Around Barolo, clay- and limestone-rich marls are common, while lighter calcareous soils are widely found around Barbaresco. Nebbiolo is the leading red grape, producing Langhe DOC wines that are often approachable yet firmly structured. Barbera contributes colour, juicy fruit and lively acidity; Dolcetto is usually intended for earlier drinking, with dark fruit and a subtle almond-like finish. Langhe also produces whites from Arneis, Favorita, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as fragrant Moscato.

Langhe DOC is a flexible appellation for wines from its defined production area. It includes wines named for varieties, such as Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Favorita. Compared with the individual DOCGs, it gives growers and producers greater scope, including for international varieties and blends. It is therefore an important designation for both traditional and more contemporary expressions. Alba, La Morra, Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba, Neive and Barbaresco are key reference towns within the wider area.

Langhe Nebbiolo commonly suggests rose, cherry, herbs and sometimes tar or earthy notes. Its tannins are evident but generally less severe than those of Barolo, and strong examples can age for several years or longer. Barbera is especially at home with pasta ragù and braises; Nebbiolo suits mushrooms, truffles, game and aged cheese. Serve the reds slightly cool rather than warm, since freshness and perfume are fundamental to their appeal.
